Speedo Cable install

Post by Gaelicguy »

Ola amigos,
I'm sure you'll believe this, because I'm probably the only one who's done this.
When I pulled the engine last year, with the intention of rebuilding, I spent a a long time lifting the body off. But I was single handing the operation. I thought I had every thing clear and disconnected.
So I started the hoist and slowly lifted the body off.
Then when I started cleaning the 30+ years of grunge of the engine, I realized I had a speedo cable hanging from the box. My immediate concern was id destroyed the back of a what I'm sure is a very expensive replacement speedo. But I pulled the speedo and found it was fine! With the other end of the cable intact.
Then I found out i had to put the car back together right away as i had to get it on a ship for Portugal in 10 days. I put everything back together except of course the new speedo cable, brakes or clutch.
Now the car is in my garage in Portugal and I'm trying to get it ready for a technical inspection. Then I will pull it totally apart and complete a bare body restoration ( the inspection has to be done as soon as they send the importation documents back to me). The process cant wait another 12 months for me to complete a restoration.
I'm working through a lot of issues ( the car was stored for 35 years) but I don't currently have the ability to drop the engine and install the speedo cable. I have the speedo out, and have one end of the speedo cable, but cant see where it goes through the bulkhead on its way to the gear box.
Can it be replaced with the engine in?
I'm also currently pulling the clutch and brake master cylinders, so I will have a little bit more room to play with.
Hoping someone can help!
Thanks
Michael

Hello Michael,
the speedometer cable can also be installed or replaced with the engine installed.

the opening for the speedometer cable is located at the top center at the front end of the transmission tunnel inside the driver's cab (under the ventilation box)

You don't need to remove the clutch or brake cylinder.
If you remove the dashboard and the ventilation box, it will be easier for you to access it and you can simply feed the speedometer cable from bottom to top..
but it's not absolutely necessary, but easier

and the rubber seal (marked yellow in the picture) seals the opening
