Original colours question

Post by angleboxjim »

Hi all Newby ;) question here that may have been covered before, I've a question on original colours of underside etc ?

An early blue 1967 phase 1 Dino Spider ( within first 500 chassis numbers ) would the under side be body colour or black originally from factory ?
I have evidence of both and also the same under bonnet and boot, so i assume the same question there too.

After looking through a good few images on the internet both seem apparent making me unsure if should be coloured or black like a Ferrari etc

Could/would someone advise me , thanks and merry Christmas to all.

I too would be curious to poll the Dino community as to whether the engine compartment should be body color or black.
I've seen both. When I bought my car there must have been 4 different shades and levels of black gloss finishes in the engine compartment.
With my engine and transmission out of the car now, I will either paint body color or paint a uniform black.

Did you consult the Mike Morris book already?
There was a discussion in the German forum about the question whether the sill area was black or not of a 2400 Spider and it seems it was in body paint.
Here is a discussion about the engine bay: viewtopic.php?t=701

Thanks for link Tobi to the last thread.
I'm still unsure as my vehicle is within first 500 , without Dinoplex
Would they in production painted the shell and then blacked over the top in the bonnet and boot area's ?
Would like to get it right for a very early 67 vehicle . thanks

I have a Spider# 665. It’s probably one the very few unmolested cars. The inside of my boot/trunk is black over the original colour. The lid inside is body colour.
Engine compartment, firewall, inner fenders and front end are black over original paint. The underside of the bonnet is body colour.
Inside of doors is body colour, but hardly covering the steel, 1 coat my guess.
Inside the cab, rear and front bulkheads are black over original colour.
Right or wrong that’s the way mine is painted and apart from a repair behind the drivers door, its original paint.

Hi ,
Thanks so much for your answers that does seem to be what has occurred with my Dino as looks like black over body colour but its a low chassis number car with alloy dash etc so its a phase one slightly earlier than your one.
Thanks again I've a while yet before I make the final decision so will keep investigating.

In the Fiat Dino Spider Series 1, only the underbody and the underside of the wheel arches are originally black.
The engine compartment is painted in the color of the body.
I have Dino #0000222 and #0000259 and both of them were like that before the restoration..
I also saw some Dino Spider 2000 at Dinopoint in Bergamo (specialist for Dino - Ferrari and Fiat) from the first and second series..
Series 1 had the engine compartment in body color and Series 2 and 2400 the engine compartment was black.

The inside of the hood/bonnet is also painted in the vehicle color at the Series 1.. series 2 and 2400 are black..

The black paintwork on the underbody extends to the end of the transmission tunnel on the firewall
