Rear wheel bearing for 2400 Coupe

Post by Kal »

Hi all,

I'm in need of rear wheel bearings for my 2400 coupe. I know the original part - 4179455 - was an SKF 615645/a, but they are no longer made. Superformance appear to have an option, but my curiousity has got me wondering if anyone found of a suitable replacement? There are many cars out there that also used this bearing, so there has to be something from a reputable bearing company available.

In my experience the SKF part number VKBA 3683 for Citroen/Peugeot is a suitable replacement. The difference is a ring for a ABS sensor which is simply not used.

Hi Scalino.

I'd read on a Lamborghini Urraco forum prior to posting here about someone who had tried the VKBA 3683 without much luck (they also used the 615645A). However, they mentioned someone else tried them with success on a Jalpa, which also used the 615645A.

Have you used the VKBA 3683 on a Dino? If so, then that will be my go-to.

I am now well versed with bearings. The original SKF 615645A is a double-row, angular contact ball bearings with solid inner and outer rings, and has measurements of 45x84x39. There are numerous bearings out there with these dimensions that also have an ABS sensor, but aren't necessarily double-row and/or angular contact ball bearings.

However, after much research - and verifying with a few ball bearing suppliers - the following bearings have the same properties as the 615645A (in price order from cheapest to most expensive):
KG DAC45840039 (£32ea)
FAG 547103E (£48ea)
SKF BAHB-309797-C (£141ea)

I would have preferred the FAG bearings, but could only find 1 in stock, so ended up with KG. The bearings can be found cheaper on eBay, but don't have the luxury of time. Will post on the result once they arrive and have been fitted.

These will also fit the Fiat 130, Lamborghini Urraco, Jalpa, Stratos, etc.

Can confirm the KG bearings fit perfectly.

Hi Kal. Checking in to see how the bearings are doing. Have you been able to put any miles on them?

Why did you select that one over the SKF or the FAG?

Thanks, Luis

Hi Luis.

I've put 1,200km on them, and experienced zero issues to date.

I would have gone for FAG, but I couldn't source them (or the SKF) in the timeframe required.

regards,

Kal
