2.0 Coupe gearbox removal

Post by robmurray »

Does the engine have to be removed to get the gearbox out or is there a way of just getting the gearbox out by itself?
Many thanks

Engine does not need to come out. Nuts on bellhousing can be tricky, but is doable with universal joints, extensions, skinned knuckles ... I do not remember the fine points of this exercise but certainly the starter motor must be removed and therefore the header pipes. Motor mounts at the crossmember probably (??), to allow tilting the engine back. Disengage shift fork and remove slave cylinder from bellhousing. Remove the flex joint and drop / remove the driveshaft. Pry out the retainer holding the shift lever from inside the car. Overall not a bad job, just plug away and you will get it done. Use common sense and work safe. Trans is not excessively heavy but working with car on jack stands is not ideal.

Agree, doable with common sense and patience. Slacken off engine mounts at cross member and disconnect LH exhaust at the connector. Top two bell housing nuts are - character building. Use care on gear stick gaiters to avoid tearing.
