Overwhelming Petrol/Exhaust Fumes

Post by Kal »

Hi All,

When driving the 2400 Coupe, I end up having to put the windows down as I start to taste the colour purple due to the intense smell of exhaust fumes/petrol. If I put anything in the boot, it carries an exhaust smell around for days.

Anyone else suffered from this, and what was the fix?

Kal.

I think its better to ask who is not experiencing this :-) Even if I am driving just 10 minutes, you can tell by the smell which car I drove. Its different on my two Coupe's, so its not naturally given and there are possibilities to improve.

You can try to ensure the seals at the trunk and in the rear lights are in good shape, as often the exhaust fumes come in from the rear end. Also check that the 3in1 are not blowing through.

OK. I thought is was just me, but this is the first classic car I've owned where both car and driver ingest fuel. The smell on your clothes, even after a short drive is astounding. I won't even mention the smell of everything in the boot!

The seals looked ok when I last checked (after driving 1,100km in a single day from the UK to Switzerland) as that was the first thing that came to mind, but then thought I may be missing something else. Obviously not.

My coupe doues not smell inside (not much ;) ):

Modern fuel is unfortunately more poisonous than 1970 super, and it is very aggressive towards old ruber and fuel hoses.

I replaced all my hose with modern FPM-ECO DIN 73379 material.

Final step was to replace the old rubber part for the fuel filler:

Not only the Dino Coupes are suffering of smell from exhaust fumes.

When I first noticed the smell of exhaust fumes in my Spider´s boot,
I checked the exhaust systems for leaks, but in vain.
Only after a new rubber seal for the boot lid was installed, the smell
was gone.

Strange enough, after having driven with the soft top down, I now
and then can feel a slight smell of exhaust fumes from my clothes!
This got an explanation, when the american TV-series "Mythbusters"
equipped an open Mazda Miata with a smoke grenade.
When it was installed just behind the car´s rear valance, the smoke
was sucked forward, filling the whole car with smoke - even at high
speed! See pic below:

Only when moving the smoke grenade clearly behind the car, the
smoke was not sucked forward anymore:
