We changed the wiring to your suggestion, although we bypassed the electronic ignition, and have temporaily gone with a points and 12v coil. The hot starting is much improved (and the cold starting also), so must've been a weak spark issue. I now have a rev counter that bounces around all over the dial!. Do you think that I'd have the same spark strength if I go get the car rewired over to the Dinoplex again.
Thanks, Brian
Hi Brian,
just to be sure, you have a Super4 ignition with a Bosch 0 221 119 030 "red" coil (as supplied by Superformance), or a Bosch red coil with an original Dinoplex AEC103A?

If you have the original AEC103A, then the Bosch red coil is the wrong type and won't work properly with the Dinoplex. A good replacement for the original AEC103A ignition coil is a MSD Blaster II coil. There is a good chance that the AEC103A is partially or fully defective by now though.

The Veglia rev counter in your Dino is a later electronic type, it won't work with the signal coming from a coil minus terminal (as currently wired up with the points to coil setup), but only with a points or electronic trigger signal.

If originality is not a big concern, switching to a MSD 6A #6201 & Blaster II coil is an easy to install setup which is quite similar to the original AEC103A. If you want to keep it original, there are several choices, including installing the internals of a Crane XR3000, MSD 6AL-2 or high power Bosch ignition inside the Dinoplex AEC103A enclosure.

Good luck,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
I have a Super 4 coil, and I THINK the previous owner stuck a Super4 ingition pack within the Dinoplex casing. I will need to lift the Dinoplex to have a look. I have great starting now (hot & cold). Do you think that I'd retain that situation if I set it up on the electronic igintion box instead of direct from coil to pints?
Thanks, Brian

Hi Brian,

use a screwdriver handle to knock against the Dinoplex enclosure, if it sounds hollow it is a Super4.

Regarding the ignition setup test and retaining the the good starting behaviour, just rewire everything as before and simply bridge the white resistor with a wire while starting, then remove the wire when the engine runs. If this works out to your satisfaction (e.g. similar startup performance to the points and coil setup), then install the relay setup as in the previous wiring diagram. This should also reactivate your tacho.

Good luck,
Adrian

If you rewire your ignition back to include the Dinoplex again and get a non-starting Dino, when hot, you must have an issue with your Dinoplex.
My original large Dinoplex gave up some years ago, without any indications of upcoming problems. After having the Dino parked for 1 hour, after a
longer drive, it just would not fire up. After swiching over to the emergency mode, it fired up promptly. When opening the Dinoplex box, already
the strong smell of burned electronic components was reason enough to look for a replacement...

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I have a spare Dinoplex, and 2 other electronic boxes 9ncluding a small Bosch unit that worked very well on BS1319, and I don't remember why we removed it!. Will try your suggestion, and Adrian's too. Many thanks, Brian
