On my car it was: nut - strap - thick washer - body
But that just seems to add an extra source of resistance and I'd have thought it should be:
nut - thick washer - strap - body

Absolutely "nut - thick washer - strap - body". It only makes sense. The washers job is to prevent the strap from twisting, turning and getting gouged by the nut as you tighten. Just think about it. As long as the washer is clean, even if its in the wrong place, it wouldn't add any resistance to ground. It's the corrosion that will add the resistance. Also, make sure to decrease resistance by sanding the end of the strap and the body where they touch each other and put some dielectric grease (silver or copper, doesn't matter) between them to prevent corrosion. You want clean, shiny metal first. It's a great thing to do w/ all the electrical connections after cleaning. Don't forget to also give the same treatment to the other end of the strap.
