Where can I get these parts

Post by 4cambob »

I am looking for the rubber boot for front bumper side lights and also a rubber bellows for the bonnet release on a 2.0 coupe.

Did you ever find a source for these parts?
I'm looking for the same thing.
Last week, I found a link on this forum to a company in Italy that manufactures 9or did) a whole range of rubber parts or the Fiat.
But somehow i lost the link in my History.
Can anyone point me to the link please.
Thanks
Michael

I never found these parts. The bonnet release rubber in the photo is my own attempt at manufacture .

I have recently restored my front turn signal housings as the bumper is at the polisher having the dents taken out and polished. I powder coated inside white, outside silver, polished the reflector, cleaned up the contacts and wiring, and bought new gaskets. I have also recently made a silicone mold of the rubber boot that goes on the back of the front turn signal housing. I used the best of the 2 I had to make the mold and I had to glue some cracks back together and use some oil based modelling clay to fill some age marks so what comes out of the mold is not absolutely perfect, but should be functional. I successfully cast one part using a hard urethane resin, in black. I'm trying to decide if I should purchase some urethane resin softener to make a flexible part or purchase a soft rubber pourable resin compound [would be black with dye added, and is expensive], or even try to cast in silicone [which would be pretty trick, but it would be blue. I don't think I can color the silicone material. If I am successful, I'll be happy to offer them for sale, at my cost, to anyone on the Fiat Dino forum and maybe put some on eBay. I don't know how much demand there is out there for them.

Sounds like a good job Ben. I think I'd be interested for my 2.0 Coupe but I am not sure as I don't have a clue what indicators I should have and what the rubbers you show are. All I know is I have single bulb indicators but no parking lights anywhere. It's very hard to find out this kind of info

On the silicone I'm thinking that blue is strange, that clear would be what I'd expect. I am wondering if carbon black can be added to colour them. In plastic parts we buy in work that is the colorant.

The silicone that is used to make the molds is a room temperature vulcanizing rubber with either a tin or platinum catalyst. It is a two part system that cures in 4-8 hours. I don't know why, but most manufactures of the mold making silicones have a blue, some are a flesh tone, some whitish or cream colored. I can cast with the same material as the mold is made from, which would make the parts blue. The casting and molding compounds are pourable and about the consistency of corn syrup. I will investigate to see if there is an option to color the silicone. It isn't the same silicone that you get at the hardware store that is thick and is an air cure. The flexible rubber casting compound comes in a larger volume than I really want to purchase, at $100. I think I can get a similar result with a urethane softener, and I have both black and clear urethane and black pigment for urethane. I've got some supplies on order to make some Alfa Romeo wiper stanchions and spacers that a friend needs now, and I will need later. There are also some black plastic spacers in the Dino coupe doors that adjust the camber of the window frame, down in the bottom front and rear of the doors, and one of my doors is missing one, so I will probably cast that as well in a hard black urethane. They are parts that are not available anywhere.

Are you looking for a whole turn signal assembly or just trying to figure out the wiring? I could post some photos of my restored assemblies if that helps.

Ben.

Hi Ben. Can you post some details of the urethane softener and the hard black urethane that you mentioned as I would like to experiment in making certain parts.

There is an endless amount of info on the internet and many companies that sell polyurethane rubber, soft urethane, and urethane additives that will soften a hard resin. I've been using Smooth On products for making molds and resins for casting. You need to make sure the resin you use is compatible with the mold material. Here are some links:

The Italian Company Cigonani made all the rubber components for Fiat for years. It’s currently owned and operated by the son of the Founder. The original rubber had granite dust as a filler (the frugal founder used to drive up to the local quarry and scoop up the screening dust)
If you don’t see the part you want, it may be worthwhile contacting the company, I’m told they have all the old moulds.
