Steering Box Rebuild

Post by 71Dino »

Hi
I am in the process of stripping down my Steering Box but am not too sure how far to go. I need to get the Pitman Arm off so that I can clean it up and paint it but can't decide whether I should just bite the bullet and do a total strip down and re-build.

Has anyone ant experience on stripping down the steering box? Any advise would be very much appreciated.

Regards

Hi Darren, the question is Why you want to Open it. In my View there should be Two reasons: it Leaks or it does Not go smoothly. To Open it you have to remove the lever wich is normally very very tight, you Need a really big puller and a lot of heat. If you get it off, Then you can put it apart. New seals and Bearings are available but no Other parts, Roller etc.

So if it does Not leak and Turns smoothly, I would Keep it together, put new Oil in, Clean it from outside and adjust it accordingly.

Thanks Thomas

I didn't really want to open it, I was just wandering of I should, sounds like I shouldn't. I do want to get the lever arm off so that I can blast it and paint. Like you say, ts on very tight but hopefully I can get it off, if not I will have to paint it on the shaft.
