Why would tightening the chains cause this? Or perhaps the rattling sound was the sign that something wasn't right, but not the chain, and it qwould have happened anyway...??

I would like to paint the dark gray area of my wheels.

Does anyone know the correct dark gray color RAL or name? I have not been able to find anything that is a very dark gray like that.

Thanks Fanalone. I had seen that thread before but it is missing some photos but yes it does show some of the "all original" wheels. It is always good to see more than one all-original item to compare notes...
